What is Borosilicate Glass?

Borosilicate was developed originally for cookware (trade name PYREX) and scientific glassware such as test tubes. This makes borosilicate glass much more durable than soft glass (soda lime) which is used to make most glass beads, art glass vases, ornaments and paperweights. The durability of borosilicate glass makes it a great product to use for glass beads.

Another major reason for using borosilicate glass is the amazing color palette available. There are actually fewer colors available to work with but each one is an organic, living color that can be manipulated and shaded with careful torch work and annealing. The finished piece appears much more dynamic and vibrant. Also, because of the chemical composition of borosilicate glass, different precious metals such as silver and gold may be used to color the glass in some very unique and amazing ways.

What is the History of the Antique Mother of Pearl Gaming Counters?

These exquisite pieces of jewelry possess a history as charming and unique as each piece is beautiful. Two hundred years ago these hand-etched pieces were used as gambling chips, the carved Mother of Pearl gaming counters have been designed into lovely pendants. Etched into each counter, symbolic parable poems showing people engaged in activities of the time provide great insights into early Chinese culture and history. Because many of the chips were custom made for British royalty and nobility, some pieces also have family crests and/or initials inscribed on one side.

Most of the counters were crafted while the brilliant philosopher ruler Ch' ien Lung was in power from 1736 until 1796. These are the beautifully etched pieces of Mother of Pearl, which can withstand strong magnification. The symbolic pictures etched into each piece tell the stories of Ruler

Ch' ien Lung's 34,000 philosophical poems, which embrace the ideals of revered and influential Chinese philosophers.

Another variety of the chips, equally lovely, were cut from thicker Mother 0' Pearl. These pieces were crafted during the rule of 'Chia Ch' ing, between 1800 and 1820. Approximately 100 years ago the British were ousted from China for perpetuating the Opium War. When they left the country they transported the Mother of Pearl chips back to their homeland. But because of the somber atmosphere of the Victorian period, the exquisite counters were forgotten in English attics and cellars. The pieces recently resurfaced, however, when a foreign correspondent discovered them in England and brought them to California.

Only the finest pieces have been selected for this collection of jewelry, and therefore, a limited number are available. Since each piece of Mother of Pearl was painstakingly hand etched more than two centuries ago, each counter is a “one of a kind” work of art. Not only does each unique chip hold within itself a beautiful forgotten poem, each one is also a lovely piece of jewelry surely cherished by the wearer.

What is 14kt Gold Fill?

It is the next best thing to solid gold. Gold fill has 100 times the amount of gold as gold plate. The end result is a solid 14kt. tube, usually with a sterling silver "core" which is strong, durable, and resistant to tarnish because of its thick, solid 14 kt. gold covering. Gold Fill, or Rolled Gold, is Fine Jewelry material that will match any 14kt gold jewelry, and will last a lifetime. I use it because there are a lot more people that can afford a $50 gold filled pair of earrings, than can afford a $400.00 solid gold pair. There is absolutely no nickel in it so it doesn't cause allergic reactions. Only 14K Gold touches the ear. It will not tarnish, and it will not discolor the ear. I wanted to create lifetime quality jewelry you would be proud to wear, yet keep it affordable so that everyone could experience the pleasure of owning a unique, custom made piece of jewelry. Solid gold jewelry is designed and made upon request with a 50% deposit.

What is the best way to clean silver jewelry?

You can also use a polishing cloth which you can purchase at most department stores.

What is Thai Silver?

Handcrafted by the various hill tribe people of Laos, Burma, Viet Nam and Thailand, Hill Tribe Silver a.k.a. "Thai Silver", is composed of .955% silver making it more pure than sterling silver, which is .925% pure. The remaining percentage is a silver alloy. This high grade of silver is used because it is extremely soft and malleable allowing these ancient people to use hand tools to etch, carve and shape each piece individually. These pieces are extremely rich and detailed in their coloration and design.

What are Venetian or Murano Glass Beads?

Venetian glass beads are handmade in Venice on the Island of Murano in Italy. The beads are lampworked meticulously one by one in front of an open flame. The vibrant colors of Venetian glass are extraordinary, and many of the beads have a center core of glass wrapped in 24KT gold, platinum and/or silver. This is a process that the Venetians have perfected, and the precious metals shine through the glass to give each bead a personality of its own. The Venetians also use what is called aventurina, which is a mixture of gold, silver and copper to bring an added sparkle to many of their beads. Venetian beads are distinctive like no other beads in the world; famous for their beauty and mystique. The Venetians have been making glass on Murano since 1291, so they definitely know what they are doing. They are truly master beadcrafters.
